In Spain, you pay property tax, wealth tax and sometimes income tax, among other things. You also pay taxes on any rental income where you can deduct many expenses such as maintenance and other costs incurred. If you buy a house in Spain, the buyer's fee is about 13.5%, but this includes most of the costs (most of this is VAT, 10%). In addition, you must open a Spanish bank account and apply for a NIE number. Normally you do this yourself with the national police or the Spanish embassy, but with us the lawyer arranges this for you. As a Dutchman, you can get a mortgage in Spain up to about 50-60% of the selling price, but sometimes it can be more. You must contribute the rest yourself with your own money, such as from savings or excess value on your home in the Netherlands. Unlike in the past, there are currently no known Dutch banks willing to finance real estate abroad.
